Invention? Innovation? It's week 3 :D

Hello everyone! Welcome back to view my blog post for this week. This week is the third week I went for Creative Studies and Mr.Yap was still the lecturer for this week but unfortunately we were told by Mr.Yap that others lecturers will be taking over the class the following weeks. Whole class felt so sad because we love Mr. Yap class so much and we know we will missed him. :(

The topics that brought up this week were:
1. Definition of Creativity
2. What is Creativity?

From the slides that Mr.Yap gave to us, Creativity is defined as ability to think up and design new inventions, produce works of art, solve problems in new ways, or develop an idea based on an original, novel, or unconventional approach. There were also other definitions given by 2 other famous people who is Robert E. Franken and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Robert E. Franken defined "Creativity" as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others. What I learned from this definition by Robert E. Franken is that "Creativity" is a way of creating new ideas which can be used to solved a problems or a situations and it can be used in entertainments. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi explained creativity in a form of diagram and it is named The Systems Model of Creativity.

  1. The creative domain, which is nested in culture - the symbolic knowledge shared by a group of or particular society or by humanity as a whole (e.g., visual arts)
  2.  The field, which includes all the gatekeepers of the domain (e.g., art critics, art teachers, curators of museums, etc.) , the producer and the receiver – audience, collectors, public.
  3. The individual person, who using the symbols of the given domain (such as music, engineering, business, mathematics) has a new idea or sees a new pattern, and when this novelty is selected by the appropriate field for inclusion into the relevant domain

And now, what is “creativity”? Creativity is an ability, an attitude and a process.

An Attitude? Yea. From the slide of this week, we know that the ability to imagine or invent something new. Creativity is not the ability to create out of nothing, but the ability to generate new ideas by combining, changing, or reapplying existing ideas. Some creative ideas are astonishing and brilliant, while others are just simple, good, practical ideas that no one seems to have thought of yet. Creativity is also an attitude: the ability to accept change and newness, a willingness to play with ideas and possibilities, a flexibility of outlook, the habit of enjoying the good, while looking for ways to improve it. Creativity is a process as creative people work hard and continually to improve ideas and solutions, by making gradual alterations and refinements to their works. Contrary to the mythology surrounding creativity, very, very few works of creative excellence are produced with a single stroke of brilliance or in a frenzy of rapid activity.

Ok, now is the time for the assignment for this week. Hrmmmm… it seems like this week assignment is a bit different from the other two. Mr. Yap wanted us to visit the http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/tech/article/the-pc-is-dead-long-live-the-tablet/ and talk about what does it tell us about the process of invention and innovation for the first part of assignment. Whereas the second part of this week assignment is visit another website which is http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20071644 and write about what kind of environment, situation etc., would make ourselves to become a creative/inventive/innovative person.

First part of this week assignment

After visiting the the http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/tech/article/the-pc-is-dead-long-live-the-tablet/ , I found out that this article is about tablets will take over the place of personal computer (PC) in future. Yea, I agree too as after the launching if the tablets, many people started to buy tablets to use. Not only that, tablets are also quite cheap compare to computers or laptops and they are many functions that are very useful to their users. When I’m walking on the road, it is common to see people carrying tablets around and use them in public. Therefore, I believe that tablets will be taking over the place of pc in future in high possibility.

Anyway, what is invention and what is innovation. Sounds similar huh, both of it have different meanings. According to the Oxford dictionary, the definition of “Invent” is create or design (something that has not existed before); be the originator of. Whereas the definition of “Innovate” is make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products. This is clearly explain that “invent” is to create something out of “nothing” while “innovate” is to introduce a better and new idea to make changes in something that already existed. The process of invention and innovation share the same objective which is fulfill human's need.

Invention

Thomas Alva Edison
Inventor is basically the one who invent a invention to fulfill human's needs. In the 19th century, Thomas Alva Edison invented the first light bulb in order to help people to see in the dark. This is a great invention that we still using until now. Without it, we are most probably still using fire in the night to light up our room. Invention is the new and unique things or item that introduce to the world. Inventor usually used scientific skills and a lot of research to invent something that is new and can fulfill human's need. Most of the times, invention is also driven by the problems that of human facing. Human has weak ability to see clearly in the night therefore we need something to assist us to solve this problem and the solution is invent a "light-producer".

The picture on the right shows the "light-producer" which is known as the first light bulb that was invented by Thomas Alva Edison.

Innovation

Innovator is the one who combining old ideas and new concepts or transforming several ideas into something new and have high value and create a product or a service that can create new value to the target customers. I am very sure that everyone knows who is Steve Jobs right? Is Steve Jobs invented Apple products? No. Steve Jobs was co-founder and CEO of Apple and a great innovator that create Apple products that millions and billions of people crazy about it. Take iPhone as an example, iPhone is a smartphone and it is invented by someone else before iPhone is release to the market. Steve Jobs combining several ideas and new concepts to the smartphone and make it become the Apple products which is more valuable in market. Innovation of certain products is carry out because of the profit of it. High profit will always drive to more innovation. Innovation does not based on scientific skills like invention, it depends on a set of business strategic, marketing operational and technical skills.

Table shows the different between Invention and Innovation.

And now is the second part of this week assignment which is visit this website, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20071644 and write about what kind of environment, situation etc., would make ourselves to become a creative/inventive/innovative person.

Have your mind become blank and cannot think of anything before? OK, just imagine this situation. You are in your room or your office and thinking about some designs or something in order to hand it up to your client in time and suddenly, your mind become so blank and you cannot come out with any designs for your client and the deadline is just around the corner. I bet everyone has encountered this situation before and this is so upset and frustrating. Me, myself have encountered this situation before too and I found out that environment and situation is very important in order to make our brain works efficiently and it will eventually leads us to create, design or invent something that is outstanding. Environment? I bet some of you will not believe that environment will affect anyone’s thinking but it does. Environment is so important that we must pay attention to it in order for us to make ourselves to become creative or inventive.
So what kind of environment or situation is suitable to make ourselves to become inspired, creative or innovative person?

An environment that is comfortable and relaxing is the most suitable to inspire us and make ourselves to become outstanding in our thinking which will eventually lead to amazing invention or innovation. The working place(environment) should be comfortable for us to work as it will reduce our stress and build up a happy environment for us that we not feel like we are force to do something. This is surely will help us to increase the efficiency of our brain and make us think out of the box! Why Google and Facebook are so successful? Is it because they have geniuses work for them? No! Google and Facebook companies pay a lot attention to the working environment of their workers because they know that a good working environment will increase their working efficiency and this build a road to success for their companies. A comfortable, happy and no pressure working environment will influence all of the workers’ mood and will inspired them which leads to blooming of creative ideas from the workers. A picture worth a thousand words. Let’s look at the pictures of Google and Facebook companies’ working environment.

Google's Company

 Facebook's Company

Wow! Such a good environment surely will boost the spirits of all the workers. I also want to work in such great woeking environment.

That all for this week. Thank you! :D

Welcome Back Again!! :D It's 2nd Week!

Wow!! 2nd week of Creative Studies already? Unbelievable. Time really fly like an arrow or maybe like a rocket! Anyway, time isn't the topic for this week and I ain't going to elaborate on this. This week's class was conducted by only one lecturer and the lecturer is...... Mr. Yap! I really like him because he can conducts his class without letting anyone fall asleep as his way of conducting lectures is always funny and creative.

Creativity? Do you think it is a simple and understandable word? Hrmmm…  for me it is a complex and special word. Ok! Hoop on the time travel machine together with me and travel back to the past! Why do I say so? This is because since few thousand years ago, people at the past already involved their “Creativity” in their life. Without their creativity, there will be nothing at all now. They used their creativity in creating tools for hunting, mining and plantations. Not only that, language, transportation and communications also created creatively by them. When their creativity bloomed at their age, they able to evolve their tools using creativity and this evolution is continues until now!
Guess what? The first topic for this week is……………. 5 words that associate and another 5 words that do not associate with Creativity. Basically is just a few words that comes to your mind when you think of “Creativity”.

OK. Now I will begin with 5 words that associate with “Creativity”.

First words that came to my mind is……… DESIGN.

Of course this is the first word that comes to everyone’s mind. What is the most important thing or element in a design of a thing?  For me, the most important element must be creativity of the design. Without any creativity, the “thing” will dull and unable to attract anyone’s attention.  The ability of attracting somebody attention enable the value of the “thing” to increase and make itself more valuable.

And now the second word is.........................GAME.

Not the sport game, not field game but the computer games or video games. Yeap, I'am a gamer and I love to play many kinds of computer games such as action games, strategic games, RPG games and many more. Why I will think of "Game" when it comes to the word "creativity"? hrmmm... This is simply because nowadays there are many computer games that are selling in the market and only the one which is creative enough to come out with new ideas, new concepts and new things able to stand out and win. To survive the battle, some game developers use their creativity to challenge this situation and they manage to produce outstanding results. Example of successful games in the market that are produced by the creativity of the producer is, Patapon and Angry Birds. Me, myself like to play computer games that are with new ideas or concepts because it will not be boring or similar to other game. Furthermore, my ambition is become a game developer so this brand new concept games serve as the references and key for me to success in future. Hence, I related creativity with games.

Patapon: Game with New Concept

One of the example of new concept games,

PATAPON

A video game that combines features of rhythms games and god games.

This game presented in a cartoonish, silhouetted two-dimensional environment

Player plays as a deity that commands an army of caricatured miniature tribal creatures by beating traditional talking drums.

ANGRY BIRDS

combination of addictive gameplay, comical style, and low price

"one of the great runaway hits of 2010"

Wew~ the third one is............. SUSHI

Curious about why I think sushi will associate with the word "creativity"? At first, I didn't think of it at the class but when I went to a sushi shop for a dinner with my family, I got this idea when I saw those special made sushi. I bet you may be questioning why I say sushi is associated with "creativity". Pictures explain better than words.

Example of  creative sushi that I found on Google:

Variety of Creative Sushi

"Panda" Sushi

"Laptop" Sushi

Fourth word is.................... DESSERTS

"Food again?" I think you will be saying this. Yea! Any problem with food? Creativity not only present in design in building, art, or products, it also present in food! Nowadays, people not only demand for the taste of the food only, the look of the food is also quite important as it serves to get the attention from the consumers and the look of the food may also be affecting the appetite of the consumers. Hence, when I think of the word "creativity", "dessert" pops out in my mind. Let's see some example of creative dessert I found on Google. I believe that now Culinary Art also look into the "creative" element seriously.

And now, the last word is................... GOD

Of course! God is so creative that He create the world that we now live in. He is the creator of all of the things and creatures in this world. Everything in this have their own characteristics, size and shape. There are also different characteristics, looks, size and shape between human even though we are the same kind! So, God is so creative and He use his creativity to create we that different in many ways so that we are not the same to each other. If God is not creative enough, we might be all end up with the same look, just like the robot! God also uses His creativity to create such wonderful  and impressive nature's beauty. Natural phenomena such as rainbow, rain, lightning, storm, aurora and many more are made by creativity of our God in order to enrich our life. Hence, God surely is associated with "creativity".

It is quite easy to think of 5 words that associate with "Creativity" but it seem that I have some trouble to think of the other 5 words that doesn't associate with it. Well, I guess other people also having the same problem with me so....... I think I will try my best to find out these 5 words.

Here goes the other 5 words that doesn't associate with "Creativity".

What should I put for the first word. Maybe................. DULL.

Hah! This is the first word that comes to my mind. When you hear the word dull, you will feel like, " Awwwwww...... so boring..... " or feel like nothing new, common... not unique. I believe everyone feel the same. When I hear of this word, it gives me a feeling like it is just simple, common and I very sure that it has nothing related to creative nor creativity. So, Dull is definitely a word that not associated with "creativity".

The second word is.................. LIMITATION.

If there is a limitation in anything, there will be a some blockage or restriction that will prevent us from doing what we really want to do. Same goes to our own creativity, if there is a limitation in certain area that can limit us from doing it, we cannot use all our creativity or sometimes all of our creativity may be banned. Limitation also make us feel stress or helpless when doing something as we will be worry about whether we can achieved our target or not. Combining the 2 things I have mentioned before, I think limitation really is a word that does not associate with "creativity".

The third word I think of is...................... BLANK.

Blank? Indeed. Blank has the meaning of empty. When someone say about their mind are blank, they are refering to the have no ideas or run out of idea or don't know how to solve a problem. In this case, we can link the word "Blank" to "Creativity" because if they run out of ideas, that means that their mind are empty and fail to carry out creative thinking and this cause them to lose their creativity for temporary.

Running out of idea..... Hrmmm... Fourth one is............... FORMAL.

Meaning of formal is something that done in accordance with rules of convention or etiquette and it is suitable for or constituting an official or important situation or occasion. Hence, creativity is not suitable to fit in with something that is formal or else it will be rejected by most of the people. People that are older or a bit close-minded that are already used to formal, they hard to accept new things or ideas that came from creativity of someone. Hence, formal is totally not associated with creativity.

Finally, the last one is................................CULTURE.

Culture is something that definitely cannot be altered or changed. Everyone must follow their own culture as it is the things that is passed down by our ancestors since many years ago. Although we can do it in a simplify way but we can never do any changes to it because we need to respect our culture and also ancestors. Hence, creativity is not applicable in this area as it will not be accepted by most of the people.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the 10 words, Mr. Yap gave us to watch a short video that is about a talk by Ken Robinson on TED in Feb 2006 and he wanted us to respond and reflect to this talk.

Sir. Ken Robinson

After I listened to this talk, I felt so inspired and what Sir. Ken Robinson talked on the stage is extremely important and everyone have to pay attention to it. Sir. Ken Robinson brilliant challenged the ways of normal education systems that apply in every country in the world. Impressive. The title of the talk is" Creativity is as Important as in Education as Literacy and We Should Treat It in A Same Status".

Sir. Ken Robinson had pointed out that every country has the same hierarchy of subjects which is Mathematics and languages at the top and humanity is at the bottom of the art. This is clearly states that subjects such as art and humanity that the government of a country feels that it is not as important as the sciences, mathematics and languages subjects and doesn't give any contribution to the development of their country is always put aside. Without any exceptions, it also happens in my country Malaysia. In the secondary school, there are two main streams that we can choose when we reach Form 4 after we take our PMR and the 2 streams are Science streams and Art streams. The first, second and third class is the class for the science streams students but after the third class it is known as the Art streams class. This is so unfair that science streams always occupy the first class which is usually been look up by all of the people even the teachers in school while the art students that are in the fourth class and below hardly get attention from any people and they also being look down by the other people. This causes great humiliation to them. Why this situation is appearing and it is an unacceptable situation now. Creative as the symbol for art should be treat the same with the other as Sir. Ken Robinson said, " The whole world is under revolution."

In his talk, he also spoke about parents doesn't let their children to get in touch with their favourite subjects that they think are useless in the future with a reason which is children will not get a job or good work in the future. They only encourage them only to pay attention with those subjects that are useful in future such as science, mathematics and geography. "Don't do music, you won't be a musician. Don't do art, you won't be artist." These are the example of parents discourage their child to involve themselves in creative path that gave by Sir. Ken Robinson. For example, Me, myself had also encountered with such situation before. I am a Science streams student and my father hoped that I can become a doctor or a pharmacist in future. But unfortunately, I don't really like to study and I know that to become a doctor, I need to study a lot and memorizes tons of scientific names and theories and this will kill me! So, I told my father that I wanted to study Creative Multimedia and become a Game Developer or Animator in future and the result is my father angry me for a week. He said," study art is useless and completely waste of time! Become a doctor so that you have a brighter future!" What a horrible experience. What I want to point out is that, many parents still stick to the idea that only doctor, lawyer and engineer can have a bright future and can earn a lot of money while those who study art and become artists or musicians will end up become a failure. Now, the world is under revolution and this out-dated idea must be eliminated in order to follow the pace of the revolution. Everyone should dump away this rotten idea because art is as important as science. Creativity is the key to success now.
